El primer Ministro Samuel Hinds fue juramentado como presidente interino el 8 Marzo 1997.Jagan,quien murio de un fallo cardiaco el 6 de Marzo 1997 en el hospital Walter Reed Army en Washigton, sera cremado en su pueblo natal Port Mourand/
Guyanese First Lady Janet Rosemberg stand by the coffin with the remains of President Cheddi Jagan March 9, while residents pay their last respects. President Jagan, who died March 6 from heart failure in Washington, will be cremated March 11 at his birthplace Port Mourant, 90 miles east of Georgetown. Prime Minister Samuel Hinds was sworn in as the new president.
